Mended from three pieces. ; A standing male figure clad in himation and Phrygian cap and carrying pine cones and fruit. The man is nude save for the cloak, slung over his left shoulder and falling down his back. He holds the offerings in the crook of his left arm, in the fold of his garment. A hole pierced in the lowered right hand indicates the former presence of some object, possibly a staff, in that hand. The figure stands on an approximately circular base with tori above and below. At the back, a square pillar ending in a rectangular capital. Clear traces of red on the cloak. Missing: head, left arm except for the tip of the hand, fragment of left knee below the joining point, small chips from upper torus of base.; The woman's weight is on her right leg, so that her body has a pronounced curve to the right. The upper part of her body is nude. She holds her drapery (with her right hand) so arranged that the rolled fold below her thighs falls between her knees straight to the ground. Four vertical locks of hair lie on the back of her neck. At her right a dolphin posed on its head served as a strut. It is cut all of a piece with her drapery. A strut still remains as well below the right elbow of the Aphrodite. The back below the neck has been roughly cut away.; Pentelic marble.","1 May 1933","" "Portrait Head of Female Figure","","","Agora:Object:S 362","Object","","Agora","Ca. 162-166 A.D.","S 362","","Agora:Image:2012.03.4610::/Agora/2012/2012.03/2012.03.4610.tif::3744::5616","In fine preservation.; A portrait of a middle aged woman (Faustina the Younger ?) with rather severe features and with hair parted in the center and drawn down in waves to a chignon in the back, below which escape several locks of hair.; The bust has evidently never been finished: the lobe of the ear is uncut, the rough surface of the forehead is unpolished, the locks of the hair on the neck are without shape, the roughly worked surface of the skin in the region of the clavicles has not been cut down to its final level, and the points on cheek bones and chin have not been removed.; The head was intended as an insert in a large statue: the lower edges of the cut below the base of the neck are rough-picked, with a smooth band at the outer surface.; Work of the 2nd half of the 2nd century A.D.; White Pentelic marble.; Drilled for setting with bronze pin in hollowed base 1956.; ; ADDENDA H.
