Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit 5694 is a small ashy patch that was revealed with the removal of 5692. It contained bone and flecks of carbon up to 1cm but no traces of carbonized botanicals. Although the deposit seemed to be a thin lens of ash on top of the floor surface, excavation revealed that it is the fill of a small pit dug into the pebble floor. A small sample of the deposit was tested with onsite water sieving for carbonized botanicals. No olive pit or grape pips were recovered from the 2L sample, though flecks and chunks of carbon were noted. The amount of animal bone in the fill seems to indicate that deposit 5694 is the fill of a small refuse pit dug into the courtyard floor. It is perhaps zoogenic, resembling the pits created by chicken scratching in courtyard surfaces.
