Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   1004
Date:   2016/06/06
Lot:   Lot 2016-061
Stratum:   fine rounded, subangular, spherical and tabular pebbles, medium subangular tabular pebbles, ceramic tile fragments
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   This is the fill for a grave (Grave 2016-08) that was truncated by a later grave dug in 1990 (Grave 1990-22) There are three subadult skulls in the west end of this context. The skulls are side by side in a row (more or less) along the western boundary. It seems like th emiddl skull might be the most recent primary inhumation. A left humerus was found semi in anatomical position between the middle and north skull, indicating it belonged to the middle skull. A huge root was uncovered in the middle of the fill on the west side. It disturbed these infant burials in addition to the truncation by the grave/ossuary (Grave 1990-22).

As Kostos contined the pass to the east, he exposed a pair of articulated feet at the eastern end. The feet belong to a juvenile individual. An infant humerus was also found is this area. The feet are resting on their plantar aspect side by side. Legs have appeared so it is possible that this is a fully articulated individual. Probably not associated with the crania in the west end which are at a notably higher elevation (later note: one of the two skulls in 1005 may be associated with these remains as it was diarticulated and may have been moved to make way for another burial, such as that of Grave 1990-22). Yesterday, Kostos removed some hard concrete like substance along the edge of the context next ot he south wall (Wall 929). This substance continued to the east. It may represent the original floor of the church. This grave went through the floor. After further excavation, ti was found that the articulated legs were not associated with further articulated elements. They are cut off just below the proximal epiphysis of both the tibia and fibula on both sides. We removed the articulated legs and feet (1006) from the east end and the three crania from the west end (1005 and 1011). The middle cranium (Skeleton 1011) proved to be articulated with several vertebra, some ribs and the right humerus, clavicle, and scapula.
The next objective in digging this fill was to reach the spinal column protruding from the south scarp of Grave 2016-07. This burial falls within Grave 2016-08 but may not have been intended for the observable boundaries of Grave 2016-08 (within cut 1009). It may have been an earlier burial truncated by both Grave 2016-07 and 2016-08. There are some large chunks of white concrete material mixed with the fill, likely from a concrete subfloor that was cut by the digging of the grave.
Coin 164 was found in the sieve.
There are some upper limb bones appearing on/near the spine, likely articulated or associated. Further west, but on the same line, a large femoral head and neck were removed. It was nestled in a paretal and part of a scapula. There is moderate root activity throughout the context. The upper limb bones mentioned are indeed articulated with the right forearem crossed over the left. These elements are designated as Skeleton 1012 along with the spinal column. The skeleton 1012 extended beyond the original designation for context 1004 with the lower limbs extending to the east. Upon further investigation, Kostos determined that the cut in the east was false and extended fill 1004 and cut 1009 to the east beneath fill 1003.
Coin 165 was found in the sieve.
There are multiple tile fragments mixed throughout the fill. There is a cut being defined for the burial event of Skeleton 1012. It does not reach the full extent of 1009. It is possible that the area encompassed by cut 1009 and fill 1004 was used so many times for burial that there are multiple truncated burials contained within cut 1009. It may be that because the fill was constantly being reused, the lines were no longer evident to us during excavation.

Coin 166 found in sieve.
Coin 167 found in sieve.
Coin 168 found in sieve.
This fill context was closed as we started to excavate Skeleton 2012 so that any bones from the skeleton foun in the sieve would be associated with it. The fill cut by the cut for skeleton is possibly different than that for 1004. (Later note: it was excavated as Context 1015).
