Stratum:   Fine subangular tabular pebbles, medium subangular, spherical and tabular pebbles, ceramic tile fragments, few coarse angular pebbles, few cobbles (subangular); overall 30% + overall pottery 20%
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the N. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   This context was started to explore the area beneath the overlying limestone dust/work surfacce. This appears to be a fill benath this surface in the apse, possibly to raise the level of the church to that surface. This was then covered by the fill of contexts 1036 and 1037. In the first pass (ca. 10-12cm in SE), some large pottery fragments came from the fill in the SW quadrant. There is what may be the remnants of the upper limestone and mortar chunks/dust surface in the SW corner - represented by a scattering of white in the soil. We seem to be coming down on an organgey clay-ey level - at least this is appearing along the west and south edges of the section. This orangey clay level is quite uneven and does not appear to span the entire sectio nto the esat, but does to the north. On second consideration, the organgey clay extends to the east edge as well.
Pottery is mostly classical.
