Title:   Backfill at eastern edge of south drain
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   114
Date:   2014/04/16
Stratum:   less than 5% small angular cobbles; roots
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We decided to remove the small strip of soil to the east of the south drain for which we were unsure if it was backfilled or not. We took it as a cleaning level to be sure and quickly found a clothing tag within it which confirms that it had been backfilled, probably to protect the end of the drain. For previous work on the drain see NB 880, pg 85-6 for end of season summary.
After remvoing the backfill, it revealed dark reddish brown below, which was also found in 1995 at the end of the drain. We assume that we have now reached the level at which they previously excavated to. It turns out there is more backfill to the east, which corresponds to a previously excavated area. (B. 47, NB 880, pg 77). The uneven slope is probably due to weathering and it slopes to the west and east with the high in the center. The scarp created in the south does reveal that there is a dark brownish black that sits on top of the dark reddish brown. Our next move is to remove the brownish black in the trench.
17/4/14:
We finished removing the backfill and are left with the same scarp line as B. 47 (NB 880). Below the backfill is a second layer of reddish brown that appears to go under the brownish black which is throughout the eastern half of the courtyard.
