Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SE. The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We next move to the extensive lens of black soil that covers most of our courtyard surface. We decided to sieve half, since there will be such a large amount of material. We start our pass in the NW and move eastward in a strip c. 1.20m wide. We are leaving a martyr aong the walls of c. 35-40cm. This surface has many fewer inclusions than 102 and seems less like a laid surface. The pit 108, which the removal of 115 took down to a rounded depression, is now gone. There is a small concentration of pebbles revealed between where 108 used to be and 80. The next W to E pass removed the tongue of soil in the center of the courtyard. At the E of this tongue a little red soil came up with the black. The pebbles in the north may form an extended surface. Cleaning is bringing more to light, though they still don't ome very far south. In the center, the inclusions of the lower surface are larger but the whoe area is well-packed. In the east, removal of 117 is revealing a lower course of preserved stone of structure 94. [22-4-14] Thanassis then worked on the eastern most areas of the courtyard, first taking the SE, then the NE corners on either side of structure 94. There is more bone in the SE. Where the martyr meets the south wall of structure 94, a small patch of lighter soil was revealed, possibly clay? The NE corner of 117 is much rockier than the rest and is taken out with a large pick. The workmen think that what forms the bottom of the stone pit is the same surface as at the mottom of the rectangular depression in the center of the courtyard. We are still under the impression that the stone structure was laid on the surface rather than cut into a later level. After the removal of 117 we still have soil laid onto the western stones. In the NE corner of the courtyard a fill of softer soil with fewer, smaller inclusions has been revealed. The pebbled surface previously mentioned at center north of the courtyard is on a bit of a hump that sopes moderately eastward and continues underneath the soft soil in the corner. In following the course of this hump it's possible that Thanassis has dug into this soft soil a bit. The next pass is made E to W along the south of the courtyard. After this, Thanassis wants to go back to that softer soil in the NE corner and take another pass in the area without changing contexts as it seems the same to him despite the change in inclusions. The elevation of that soft fill in the NE corner between passes was 85.77. We've taken the precaution of changing pottery buckets here and at the sieve (starting with #6) in case we discover we're wrong. He's starting this second pass by expanding E along the sourth extent (not the NE corner). To the SW of structure 94 there may be an oval cut. After the 1st pass it was not well defined, but this second pass has made it a little more clear? It appears the sides are sloping suggesting that it is a shallow pit. Removal of the soil directly west of structure 94 included 3 medium subangular boulders. These are the largest stone inclusions to date. The nice courtyard surface found after pass 1 in the north is now being revealed in the south. The inclusions of this surface vary from flat cobbles and tile to well rounded pebbles (probably water worn). A few large stones were removed directly next to structure 94, possibly tumble from an upper course. The exterior west face of structure 94 is being revealed. With 117 done, we go on to take the martyr down, with a plan to section this courtyard into N/S halves and focus on the N side, in part looking for a terminus ante quem for the storne structure 94.
