Title:   Soft Soil SW Corner Room 8, Unit II
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   150
Date:   2014/04/23
Stratum:   pebbles (subrounded, 2%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 150 is an area of soft, disturbed soil in the SW corner of Room 8 of Unit II, on the interior corner of Wall 13 NB 877 (now Context 157) and Wall 16 NB 845 (now Context 156). It was a fairly shallow, round lense possibly representing a disturbance to the surrounding white clayey surface revealed in Context 140. Here, the soil was softer and darker, though the shallowness and shape of the deposit make its function unclear. No clear cut was discerned, and it may represent something set up against the walls and just S of the proposed "bench" against Wall 13 NB 877 (Context 175) - see Context 140 notes.
A hard, red, (white) pebble-rich layer was revealed below the soft soil, and this context was closed. In the adjacent context excavated to the E, context 151, the lower red pebble layer was shown to continue to the E.
Later Notes (29/4/14):
This red, pebble layer appears elsewhere in the trench and at the close of Contexts 174 and 184 was visible in patches in the central part of the room and on the edge of Wall 157. A small amount of a similar soil was excavated in Context 183 (see notes for this context).
Pottery was Medieval but could not be dated closely. This context is therefore dated stratigraphically to the Late 13th-early 14th c.
