Stratum:   Inclusions: pebbles to cobbles (subangular, 10%), ceramics (5%), bone and shell (2%, large fragments).
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 153 is a layer of debris or probable sub-floor in Room 8 Unit II. Initially we suspected that this debris remained from a deposit overlying the floor revealed in the S portion of the room in Context 140 and excavated in Context 168. Beneath this debris some patches of probable floor were discovered but it was highly abraded and in general not preserved. Particularly in the NW, the soil remained rich in inclusions including stones, pottery, and bone. It therefore seems likely that this context represents a sub-surface for the floor preserved in the S part of the room.
During the excavation of this unit, a strip of softer soil running parallel to the E wall of the room (Context 155) was revealed, and was later shown to continue to the S under the floor excavated in Context 168. It may be a foundation trench for this wall.
We also revealed a floor-like surface running into the depression (Context 162). Because this was originally interpreted as a sunken floor, we decided to excavate inside the depression, anticipating that the sub-surface would continue into this area. It did not; rather, it was a pit.
