Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 163
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Courtyard surface with pebbles
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   163
Date:   2014/04/24
Stratum:   30% large rounded pebbles; small subrounded cobbles; ceramics
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is light brownish black. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We have turned out attention to the removal of the courtyard surface characterized by the large river pebbles. We began in the west and are moving towards the east where it begins to slope down. We are not excavating its full extent beut are bounded by an arbitrary boundary in the south. We sectioned the courtyard to allow for continued work in this area but to get answer in the limited time left.
It appears that the removal of this surface reveals a clay layer which was exposed previously by the cleaning of the courtyard in the west near the bothros (Cut 80). We found a coin along the southern edge of the excavated area (COIN 2014-67; E: 105.52; N: 1062.56; El.: 85.67). We are taking a smaple for flotation; it should be noted that because of sectioning, this is already a smaller percentage than the whole.
Along the southern limit of the sectioned area is what appears to be an oval cut and the fill is very ashy, greyish black in color. Also the bottom of the stones assocated with Structure 147 have been revealed. Along the northern edge we are leaving a small martyr; this is the soil below the concrete level from the wall reconstruction.
We have revealed another stone on whish the stone furthest to the west of Struture 147 sits on top. The other two appear to sit on another courtyard surface revealed by 163. So 163 revealed some clayey surface which was previously exposed in the west, a second courtyard surface with smaller pebbles upon which 147 sits.
