Title:   Ashy clay courtyard surface
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   173
Date:   2014/04/25
Lot:   Lot 2014-015
Stratum:   20% small angular pebbles; flat angular cobbles; ceramics; rare bone; frequent carbon flakes; rare tile and shell
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We are now removing the ashy clay surface. There are very few inclusions. It is hard packed but difficult to tell if this was a surface or fill that got packed down. This layer is mostly in the western part of our sectioned area and is acutally truncated by the west and south limits. In the north, we have left the martyr to avoid contamination from the wall consolidation, a strip of concrete.
Below it is what appears to be a true surface with more inclusions within it. The clay surface actually peels off the lower surface very easily. The surface being revealed has more river pebbles, similar to the surface above this layer (Deposit 163). The revealed pebble surface appears to take a dive towards the east about halfway through our sectioned area. This is roughly where Deposit 163 also took a dive to the east.
A post hole cutting was revealed along the eastern extent of this deposit. It appears that Deposit 173 filled the cut as well since there was not other clear fill present. It is a very shallow cut, so we could have missed a separate fill.
This deposit stopped half way through the sectioned area as we began to reach a softer context. This boundary was minimally detected when Deposit 172 was removed and was made more clear once we removed Deposit 173.
