Title:   Fill west of drain
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   258
Date:   2014/05/12
Stratum:   25% of rounded and spherical coarse pebbles and cobbles; ceramics; bones; iron fragments
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the S. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We continued excavating to the west of drain capstones 232 because we noticed another cut which disturbes the surface. This deposit was located a few centimeters to the south of deposit 257. The soil was brownish, very soft, and had lenses of ash. The fill is large and has a sub-rounded shape. It is notable that its thickness is approximately 0.2 m. Its large size, thickness, and softness suggest that it was not part of a road repair. For the time being, its purposes remain unclear. The removal of fill 258 revealed a lower surface of a road. The fills 257 and 258 are not physically connected, but it is possible that they were created for the same reason. The road surface that was revealed by the removal of fill 257 is in a higher elevation than the surface road that was revealed by the removal of fill 258. However, it is possible that they belong to the same road surface. This part of the surface is slighly sloping and maybe that is the reason for the difference in the bottom elevation of these two fills (bottom elevation of 257: 85.85, 258: 85.87). Among the finds there was a bone pin (E. 97.38, N. 1062.13, H: 85.94) and a bronze pincher (E. 97.38, N. 1061.58, H. 85.88).
