Title:   Fill of pit abutting robbing trench in church
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   28
Date:   2014/04/09
Stratum:   Inclusions: 40% total: cement; carbon; land shell; shell & bone; tile; ceramic; glass.
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven down to the N. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   I began by defining the boundaries of a cut into the current surface visible in the scarp created by the robbing trench of the N wall of the church (Wall 20). Human remains are visible in the scarp, and the fill is easily distinguished from the surrounding soil by its lighter brown color, loose compaction and inclusions with high frequency of small white material and small chunks of terracotta. On the surface, the extent is less obviously defined, but appears to extend S from the scarp c. 30 cm, and an E-W area of c. 0.78 m. The deposit seems to be c. 34 cm deep based on the scarp. The uppermost layer of the deposit was extremely dry and compact, (probably) from the exposure since previous excavations (1990, 1996), and the edges of the pit were difficult to find in the upper 5 cm; below, the boundary was easier to distinguish. Some large fragments of faced cement were collected from the fill; all bone and pottery is also being collected. I expect that this is a pit which contains human remains, rather than a primary grave. Work will continue on 10-4-14.
10-4-14 The continuation of excavation today suggests that perhaps what we interpreted as the cut towards the surface may be stratigraphically distinct from a much easier to distinguish cut c. 10 cm below, which contained extremely loosely compacted soil with a higher concentration of bone. Its boundary is roughly ovoid, but probably disturbed by the robbing trench of Wall 20/the excavation of the robbing trench. Large chunks of plaster and carbon continued to be found throughout, esp. at the higher elevations, as well as broken rooftiles. The softer fill was much sandier in texture.
Collected: pottery (1 basket); glass (1 bag - 2 frags); bronze (1 bag - 1 object); bone & shell (1 box); cement (1 box).
Later Notes: (MTC, 12-4-14) We have continued to have difficulty distinguishing stratigraphic relationships in the uppermost surface of the area (c. 10cm), which may support our idea that the cut did not cut through the surface at that elevation, but may have cut a lower deposit. This remains to be further clarified.
