Title:   Cleaning of S scarp of RT for N wall of church
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   2
Date:   2014/04/07
Stratum:   Mixed soil composition: dark brownish brown sandy silt and silty sand. Inclusions: 50% total; ceramic; bone; stone (pebble to cobble, angular to rounded); cement; opus sectile; shell.
Description:   Top slope of the context is vertical down to the N. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is mixed- see description.
Notes:   Context is cleaning of S scarp of robbing trench for N wall of church, previously excavated during 1990 field season (for robbing trench see NB 835, pp. 32-33, 35-44, 65-66, Baskets 14, 17-22). Work proceeded from W to E with small pick and trowel. Deposit was excavated wet due to light rain overnight and in the morning. Deposit sloped to N because of scarp collapse since the previous excavations. As a result, the S edge of the robbing trench was also scraped up against the scarp.
Inclusions of pottery were frequent and one piece of opus sectile was found. Human bones were also recovered and more are visible in the scarp. Inclusions of cement fragments were also found. These may be associated with a horiziontal layer of cement approximately 70 cm long and 5 cm deep located approximately 9 cm above the bottom of the scarp, which may prove to be a lower floor level. Pottery, bones, and opus sectile were collected.
