Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 302
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Bench construct by grave with capital
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   302
Date:   2014/05/15
Stratum:   Few ceramics, a few pieces iron, some glass.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. It is clayey silt. Structure materials: conglomerate, limestone, tile; some with adhering concrete. Material size: exterior blocks 27 x 17 cm to 16 x 18 cm; interior blocks 18 x 13 cm to 8 x 7 cm.. Material finish: unworked to roughly hewn. Material construction: regular course. Material bonding: none, though some cement present probably indicating reuse.
Notes:   This structure describes the line of roughly hewn to unworked stone laid against wall 21 just north of the threshold to the narthex. These limestone and conglomerate blocks appear to also be related to a probable grave cut (317) laid against it to its east. Though drawn and recorded here, this structure was not removed at this time as the removal of the top few passes of layer 1 grave fill (308) made it appear as though the grave cut aligns with the edge of this structure and therefore the grave is later than the structure is.
16/5 :
Today, after removing another couple passes of grave fill (308), I became convinced that the grave fill extends under the structure and therefore that I was digging out of sequence. I therefore mitigated by removing this structure at this time. The grave cut now appears to underly the structure, going all the way west to wall 21. Jody and I think that this is because the top of the grave fill, a kind of crust that I had been unable to distinguish in matrix composition from that of the underlying dirt, was in reality the final episode of behavior related to the grave, wherein the structure was built on top of the grave and a layer of fill was used to level the area around the structure. Both of these actions, the construction of the structure and the laying down of a separate bucket along the side of it, probably occurred soon if not immediately after filling the grave cut and used the same backfill material.
A few nails were recorded in situ at the north end of the structure as they appear to be associated, possibly to hold the edge of the structure against wall 21 and/or to support an associated wood construct which is no longer preserved:
Nail 1 - 122.80 | 1073.58 | 85.43
Nail 2 - 122.75 | 1073.65 | 85.43
A nail at a similar elevation was found in context 308 very near this structure and may have been in similar use and associated with the bench (123.12 | 1073.50 | 85.18).
Later notes - 19/5 :
Today it is less clear that the bench went over the grave. The cut observed under the bench appears instead to first refer to the bench itself, and seems to have bedding and leveling material in it for this structure. The original line for cut 317 (grave cut) up against this structure therefore again looks legitimate, meaning 302 was dug out of sequence. However, we are mollified by the fact that it probably would have been smart to remove it anyway to enhance access to the grave.
