Notes:   In order to understand better the relationships between Unit 2, Room 7, the corridor between Unit 2 and the church, and the phasing of the church's construction, we will begin excavating the area between the southern boundary of Room 7 (121.45, 1077.60; 122.80, 1078.00) and the N wall of the churhc (Wall 20 and its associated robbing trench, excavated in 1990, NB 835 B.10-22). We sectioned the corridor on the E and W with arbitrary string lines at 121.75, 1076.30 and at 129.60, 1076.10. The corridor space was last excavated between 1993 and 1995 (all in NB 863), and the N wall of the church and robbing trench was last excavated in 1990 (NB 835). The profile of the robbing trench was heavily eroded, and in order to avoid contamination when excavating the corridor space around the trench, we opened a cleaning basket (this context, 307) to remove the most eroded, least stable parts of the scarp. We also swept the corridor as part of this context. While cleaning was underway, Thanasis, our pickman, noted what appeared to be a lower level of floor peeking out from the profile on the S side of the robbing trench, and plans are being made to excavate an additional area within the church later this season.
