Title:   Fill of pit abutting wall 156, third lens

Notebook:   1108
Context:   421
Date:   2014/06/03
Stratum:   15% inclusions: medium-coarse angular pebbles, ceramic sherds, bone, and coin
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We opened this context in an effort to pursue the foundation trench of wall 156 found in the eastern end of context 412. We excavated here just N of the N-S trench cutting across the corridor because the soil here appeared to possess the same type and percentage of inclusions and to be of the same amtrix as the soil at the E end of context 412 though a bit softer than 412. In the process of cleaning the wall abutting this context (as we took the context down) we found bits of red plaster that appear to contine along the wall. We found stones, ceramic sherds, bones and charcoal. The soil composition and inclusions of this context uggest a very close relationship etween this lens of the pit fill and that of context 412. The foundation deposit was found in the northern part of the context. Now it just remains to be seen whether this foundation deposit continues to the west or whether we have the end of it.
This foundation trch does continue all the way down Wall 156 and around Wall Context 510, but scraping suggests that our pickman decided to stop excavating after only the first of two lenses of fill within the foundation trench.
