Title:   Cut for pit abutting RT of N wall of church
Notebook:   1108
Context:   45
Date:   2014/04/10
Description:   The context shape in plan is sub-rectangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are mixed. The break at the base of the cut is gradual. The base of the cut is concave. Truncation: Probably truncated at the N end by the robbing trench which removed the adjacent portion of Wall 20..
Notes:   The pit is stepped on the E end and therefore at several elevations, which are diagrammed on the original Cut sheet. The elevations are as follows:
1. 125.48/1074.65/85,44
2. 125.35/1074.65/85.34
3. 125.22/1074.65/85.25
4. 125.039/1074.64/85.11
Later Notes: (27-4-14): I suspect that this put was originally dug alongside the N wall of the church (Wall 20), but truncated by the robbing of that wall. The robbing trench was excavated in the 1990's, and the robbing trench was dated to the 16th/17th c based on the recovered pottery (NB 835, see summary p. 139). The remaining fill of the pit (Context 28) contained a significant amount of disarticulated human remains, so I suspect that its original function may have been as a depository for secondary burial(s), which is consistent with the practice of burying along the extant walls fo the church. However, the limited preservation of the pit has made it impossible to say for certain what its original function was. Removal of surrounding deposits in the future may help to clarify the dating of this event further. The upper boundary of the cut was difficult to distinguish, and perhaps this too could be clarified by the excavation of surrounding deposits.
