Title:   E-W grave abutting robbed N wall of church nave
Notebook:   1108
Context:   466
Date:   2014/06/05
Description:   The context shape in plan is sub-rectangular. The top break of the cut is 403,. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: Cut is truncate by later robbing trench NB 835, which removed approximately half of the grave deposit; also cut at W end by cut 403, whose function is unclear at this time.
Notes:   *Because the field for "Top Elevation" will accept only one number, it is important to note here that there are in fact two distinct Top Elevations for this context due to the fact that this context has been cut at its W end by cut 403. The top elevation for truncated portion of this context is 84.81.
This was a grave (consisting of cut 466 and deposit 448) that was dug up against the north wall of the church (wall 20), through a walking surface (context 429), which is also marked with small postholes (hole-ettes) to the east of the grave (contexts 474-477, plus possibly 478). Happily, a coin was found in the fill of the grave, but it's possible the grave disturbed and cut out the foundation deposit for the wall. Unhappily, this grave was also cut by a later robbing trench (NB 835 B22) that took out the southern half of the grave, although the skull (Mademoiselle de la Tete) was peeking through the scarp of this later cut.
When we cleaned the grave cutting after removing the skeleton in this burial we could see along the N side of the cutting that there were a few bones from another burial barely peeking out (but not truly exposed), at a deep level. We do not expect to reach this burial or set of burials in the remaining days of this season.
