Context:   504
Date:   2014/06/11
Lot:   Lot 2014-036
Stratum:   ash (40-60%), fine to medium pebbles (30%), glass (2%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context is another lens within cut 464. Initially, the pit was thought to be finished. However, Panos noted a slight change in soil color (brown) that was darker than the previous lens (487). The pit tapers down on the sides, and large fragments (5-10cm) of ceramic sherds associated with two amphorae and a hydria were found (see Photo 2014-717). Glass fragments (~20), a coin (2014-231), and a small stone cross were also discovered in this pit. All three amphorae appear to be complete, and all fragments were collected for refitting. A large ash lens was found beneath one of the amphorae and was colelcted for flotation (sample 2/2). The ash was a circular deposit (0.15 x 0.15m) of silty-textured, soft light grey ash. The amphorae appeared in fragments up to 15cm apart - which implies they were more than likely broken before being buried. Given these data (ash, ceramic fragments, bone fragments, broken nature of artifacts, and poor sorting of sediment matrix), this pit seems to be a large hole for disposal of trash during this peroid.
Animal bones, 0.65 kg, saved in Lot 2014-36.
