Title:   Second Fill of Grave Abutting North Wall of Church
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   539
Date:   2014/06/19
Stratum:   Many small sub-angular, sub-rounded, and rounded pebbles of mixed lithology (30%); Many small to medium ceramic sherds (40%); many animal and secondarily deposited human bones (20%); charcoal appears as small wood fragments and flecks throughout matrix
Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   The second grave fill is makred by a change in color (brown) and compaction (softer). Sediment matrix is a moderately sorted mix of sandy silt (massive to granular textured). Color increases dark brown hue as depth increases. Many bone fragments appear to be secondarilyl deposited during grave fill. After removing most of the fill (60%), the left foot (meta-tarsals and philanges) was discovered (N:1076:32; E:129.39; H:84.59). A tile (0.28 x 0.21m) overlaid the skull, which was discovered at N:1076.00; E:127.85; H:84.66. The skull was bracketed by a second tile and two medium sized, sub-rounded limestone cobbles. A third, smaller sub-rounded limestone cobble was next to the left cobble, and wedged under the chin. As excavation continued, it is noted that the left foot was crossed over the right foot, explaining why the elevation was higher than the rest of the post-crania. Flecks of charcoal (~1mm) appear throughout the sediment matrix, and commonly were smeared across bones during excavation or handling. Charcoal appears in all fill contexts and is therefore interpreted to simply be a part of the fill, and not associated with the skeleton. Interestingly, burial decomposition created a buried A horizon, marked by the change in darker brown hue, and a texture shift from massive to granular (i.e., incipient pedogenisis).
