The entire top surface of the trench (except the far southwest corner) now appear to be at the same context level. The soil seems still to be light brown, but it seems to contain less inclusions on the surface. Some pottery and charcoal stains are vissible. We wil lbegin a large pass over the entire trench tomorrow morning.

WAB
Came out to site this morning, and the workmen had already come down upon what they were calling a surface at the far eastern edge of the trench. I am not certain that it is a surface, nor do I think that the workmen are trying to remove the entire extent of a context before tyring to change to a different context. I am having them work the eastern half (especially the northern edge in the east) to bring it all to the same "surface" level. A cleaner fill is being removed, revealing a mottled surface beneath. This "cleaner: fill may simply be the result of the rain we had last night, which formed a sort of discolored crust on the surface. It is very difficult to distinguish, but the "cleaner" crust was very thin and primarily over the sloping northern part of the context.
A coin (#22) was found while sweeping the northern area around the stub wall. This area has not been touched yet this season, but it will be assigned to the cleaning of context 610. I would not use it to date the context.
