I am now satisfied enough to start a large pass across the entire trench, starting from the east. The surface of this context is heavily mottled with pottery, tile, brick, some charcoal and stones. This mottled surface runs around the stub wall in the north, all the way to the point where the trench surface starts to slope down to the north. Looking at the profile of Graves 2014-11 and 2014-09, it seems that this layer is relatively thick, c. 8-10 cm. I am not sure that the workmen are comfortable taking it all out at the same time. We may have to take it out in arbitrary passes.
The workmen were too quick to excavate the eastern half before I realized that they were not checking the spoil well enough. They did not see or were content to toss several glazed pieces and other diagnostics, as well as many faunal remains. Guy asked them to be more careful, and consequently, we are recovering much more.
