This context is the hard patch immediately north of 629. To the east, it is certainly quite hard, but becomes more soft as one moves west. Perhaps there is a thin layer of softer fill (context 626?) over the hard patch in this place. Nevertheless, the hard soil is coming down upon the same surface found under 629. The rocky, coccia pesto-like surface extends to the northern edge along Wall 156. A much more chaotic fill seems to be immediately above it in the NE corner along Wall 156. Kostas will make antoher pass to see if the surface extends all the way to the eastern baulk.
The pebbly/coccia pesto-like surface seems to stop well before the eastern baulk. It still comes down upon a hard surface with flattened inclusions (notably a lot of brick), but it contains much less pebble-sized inclusion in the NE corner (instead more boulder-sized) than in the center of the trench. Kostas finished the second, thin pass to complete the removal of this hard material.
Guy sees the pebble context in the center and the rubble context in the NE as the same surface, as fills with slightly different compositions.
