Kostas began to take off the soft, clean material in the western half of the trench after break. He is coming down uon a hard, rough layer, similar to the pebbly surface but without the pebble-sized inclusions. The layer is thin towards the center of the trench, but grows deeper in the NW corner, around the stub wall. Some white mortar was found just north of the far western stone of the line of stones uncovered under/within 626 in the SW corner of the trench. It is the densest patch of mortar I have seen in the trench thus far. The mortar seems to respoect the line of stones, meaning that the mortar has only appeared to the north of the stones. Kostas also says that the soil on top of and beyond the line of stones is different. I will take it out as a different context. Kostas is finishing the removal of the soft material in the NW corner before turning to that, though.
