Context:   657
Date:   2015/05/04
Lot:   Lot 2015-015
Stratum:   20%, medium sub-rounded, spherical pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   (KTT) 12.05: After digging the pit by the west wall, we begin to remove the clayish surface between context 649, 650 and 654. (N.B. ERA 5-5-15: The name clayish was given this context following the term used by the excavators to distinguish it from the surrounding surfaces. However, after checking twice the composition of the soil it was agreed that the term clayish was misleading, and that the compostion of the deposit was silty sand. The exposure to the elements of the surface of this context compacted it until giiving it the appearance of a harder deposit. The excavation, however, revealed a soft compaction).
The RCL is beginning to appear in the south end of the context. We are sweeping to see if the context continues deeper to the north.
(ERA) 13.20: After discussing with the workmen and the field director it was agreed that this context extended far beyond its original limit. 657 has been expanded to the whole S area of the room up to the south wall. Excavation started close to the west wall and going south. A bunch of charcoal with pieces of c. 7cm were found close to the west wall, but they do not seem to belong to any burning spot. Day finished at 13:45 with work in the area laid out for tomorrow.
5-5-2015:
(ERA) 7.30: Work resumed in the area. Despite the expansion of the excavated area yesterday, a second test of the soil composition confirmed this to be the same. In the SE corner of the room the deposit showed the presence of some small stones (c.15-20 cm long) that could have belonged to the wall, but showing no specific organisation. Very possibly the remains of a collapse, but in such a small number that they are not really relevant as structure.
The workmen have completed their pass in the SE corner revealing more small stones all along the S wall. Scraping of the layer continues to reveal more stones imbedded in what looks to be a new layer below.
(ERA) 9.51: After discussing with Panos and the field director it was decided to close the context and open a new one using the stones as boundary. There is a division wheter the soil is the same or not in the same context and 657. The presence of stones has increased since they were noted for the first time, and although there is not apparent reason for considering the ones in surface now paret of a different collapse. However, they occupy a significantly bigger portion of the surface of the room, and thus they will constitute a new context. The edge of the context between 657 and 667 is well defined.
