Context:   658
Date:   2015/05/04
Lot:   Lot 2015-023
Stratum:   inclusions: 10% pottery, bone, tile, brick, charcoal
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Thanassis wanted to dig this patch of rocky material in the NE corner before clearing around the linear feature found while digging 655. This context (658) is similar to 655, but the soil is softer. Flecks of charcoal are appearing, evenly distributed, pebble-sized. Work continues in NE corner, 2015/05/04 End

This layer slopes down considerably to the north - even undercutting wall 156. It is likely a leveling layer of fill in order to prepare the sloped surface below for the walls built above. The surface underneath which is now appearing has much less charcoal and in smaller deposits. The rocks which had been so characteristic of this layer in the NE corner became much less frequent as we moved to the west, so we decided to create a new context (662). The matrix, however, appears to be the same according to the workmen.
