Title:   Mixed fill E of threshold under floor of church
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   67
Date:   2014/04/11
Stratum:   Soil mixed with dark reddish brown; also possibly degraded mudbrick observed as more compact clayey inclusions. Inclusions: 20% total; ceramic; bone; plaster.
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish red. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We decided to remove the deposit of mixed soil E of the threshold, which began to the SW of Context 61 and extends to the SW to the cut of the grave [grave #?). Tasos removed all of the mixed soil, more clearly identifying the boundaries of the reddish deposit to the E and the dark brown deposit to the W. He came down on the dark, clayish, greenish soil encountered at the bottom of Context 61, and we decided to close the context. All material was collected, and consisted of 1 painted plaster frag (blue), a small amount of bone (1 bag), and a small amount of ceramic and tile.
Later Notes (25-4-14): We believe that context 67 is part of a levelling fill characterized by differentiated patches of fill, perhaps created by the process of bringing in and depositing scoops of fill material. Thus we believe that it is the same as its contiguous contexts, though the matrix was slightly differentiated. This levelling fill may have been associated with the plaster/cement bedding which was partially preserved above and further to the E (Context 47).
Human bone, saved as Bone LOT 2014-21.
