Context:   713
Date:   2015/05/08
Notes:   It was initially thought this skeleton was only represented by the skull found among tile fragments, pebbles, and adult bones (including skull 711) in pit fill 684. The skull had been damaged during interment/filling of the pit, and was recovered with the cranium partly crushed by a tile fragment, still stuck to it, as well as a pot handle penetrating the skull. The skull was placed with the crown pointing skywards and the eyes looking roughly SE.
On May 11th, as excavation progressed after the removal of skulls 713 and 711, it was discovered that the child's skull was part of an articulated burial. The head was elevated (although nothing propping it up except soil was found underneath it), and the rest of the body sloped down towards the E. The body was laid E-W, with the head to the W. The arms were crossed over the chest, and the body extended supine. The right leg was missing the foot, and the left leg is gone below the knee. Since the scarp - and the edge of robbing trench of wall 20 - is so close, it seems likely the missing bones fell victim to the wall-robbers, or they were excavated as part of the excavation of the robbing trench/nearby contexts.
The tiles, small pottery fragments, and the adult bones seem haphazardly placed on top and around the child's skeleton. See 711 and 684 for more information, but it seems the child burial disturbed the top half of an adult one, and the adult bones were placed back in the ground after the pit was dug and the child laid in.
