Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   714 is a darker layer in the foundation trench (?) to the north of the north wall of the church. Kostas has dug two passes of this material out of the section that was demarcated on Friday (May 8). Guy says the pottery coming out of this context may be 11th century. We are planning to close this trench sometime today. Kostas is digging another (third) pass from this same context - it seems deeper than the contexts overlaying it. In this third pass we have turned up a line of stones extending 13-14 cm to the N from underneath the N wall of the church. This line of stones - maybe the foundation for the N wall of the church - is 35-39 cm below the lowest preserved surface of the N wall of the church. Context 714 overlays this wall, but also seems to continue down alongside the stones. Kostas thinks that 714 may continue to the N - underneath 718 - a rocky fill cut by 714, but he is unsure and so wants to dig a pass to the north to give him more room to continue digging down and also to try and see the cut better.
