Title:   Cut for Big pit in SW of Room 9
Notebook:   1109
Context:   733
Date:   2015/05/12
Description:   The context shape in plan is irregular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical with small step on SW side. The break at the base of the cut is gradual. The base of the cut is uneven. Truncation: original bottom - uneven.
Notes:   733 is the cut of an extremely large rubbish pit. Although it now is within the space of Room 9, at the time it was likely an outdoor space. The western edge of the pit is defined by Wall 720, at the moment, but it is possible that the pit extended further West into the space of Room 8. Excavation within Room 8 will answer whether or not this is the case. The pit appears to cut a hard packed surface (772), the fill of the pit was extremely rich in material, including a vast amount of pottery, bones, small domestic items, industrial rubbish, and coins. The top fill (717) does spill outside the confines of the cut. The two main levels of fill (726/747) are arbitrarily divided. Wall 720 has no foundation trench identified thus far and appears to rest on the uneven bottom of the pit. The bottom of the pit revealed patches of floor, stones that may be part of a wall of an earlier structure related to the cistern, and a large block that may belong to a wall of a previous building in the area.
