Title:   foundation trench wall 20, west of small grave
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   739
Date:   2015/05/12
Stratum:   inclusions: 10-20% tile, subrounded to angular spherical to tabular cobbles and boulders, pottery, very little bone, some mortar possibly from wall 20 construction or surface, piece of pebble flooring.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   After the first pass of the foundation trench, a cut appeared with darker, softer sediment to the east immediately overlying a tile grave. The workmen followed this darker, softer material, probably foundation trench fill that had been disturbed when the grave was constructed, and fully exposed the tile coffin structure. This grave has been left in situ for drawing, and 739 was opened to differentiate the foundation trench fill on the west of this grave as it is less disturbed and the grave cut is clear along the west side of the tile grave structure.
From this fill, some mortar from the wall is appearing along with tile, pottery, and one large piece of pebble flooring - possibly from a surface cut through for the construction of wall 20. Very little bone is present in this fill. Kostas has left a small strip of this context along its easternmost edge to protect the grave against contamination.
