Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 74
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 74
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Red fill W of NW pier base in church
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   74
Date:   2014/04/14
Stratum:   Inclusions: 20% total; bone; ceramic; glass; stone (pebbles, including possible architectural material); plaster.
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Tasos is removing the reddish deposit that extends W of the NW pier base (structure 23) and spreads out to the S/SW. The soil here is firm, with small inclusions of stone including some chips of marble. Tasos is removing 3-8cm of fill in this area, defining the layer beneath--this should remove all of the remaining crust formed by exposure to the elements.

Later Notes (25-4-14): The deposit encountered beneath this context was much firmer, darker and browner, with frequent inclusions of pebbles. Because this area also has the upturned, decorated column capital, we suspected that this might be the fill of a cut, possibly a grave that could be marked by the capital. We still suspect that this will be the case, however we did not get to revisit this area before finishing our work for 2014 Session I.
