Title:   Pit south of Unit 2 Room A
Notebook:   1108
Context:   80
Date:   2014/04/14
Description:   The context shape in plan is circular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: None.
Notes:   Removal of a cleaning layer exposed a circle of stones with a round line around them. This circular pit was cut vertically into the soil. While the sides are vertical and cut roughly well-like, the sides are not lined. In the south side there is a flat stone that sticks into the side of the cut near the top. The purpose for the cut is unclear at this time, but the finds, which include a high quantity of bones and some cooking wares as well as many tiles and stones (of all sizes, from medium to large cobbles and boulders) may suggest a refuge pit. We have excavated about 1 meter and have yet to reach the bottom.
This cut is south of Unit 2 Room A, close to its robbed souther wall and east of the drainage channel.
15/4/14:
As we got deeper the cut grew in diameter. Also some hand holds have been found, roughly in the north and south. We found the bottom of the cut and it is a flat surface. There are some stones in the bottom, but not stone lined.

Measurements -
diameter at bottom: 1.51m (N-S); 1.53m (E-W)
the diameter begins to widen about 0.57m from the top of the cut
1st foothold: location: NW; distance from the top of the cut 0.45m; width: 0.23m; height: 0.13-0.15m; depth: 0.10m
2nd foothold: location: NW; distance from the top of the cut 1.05m; width: 0.34m; height: 0.13-0.15m; depth: 0.10m
3rd foothold: location: SW; distance from the top of the cut 0.70m; width: 0.17m; height: 0.17m; depth: 0.09m
4th foothold: location: SW; distance from the top of the cut 0.90m; width: 0.30m; height: 0.16m; depth: 0.10m
Stone at bottom: width: 0.40m; length: 0.30m
There are a total of four footholds in the wall. Two on the NW and two on the SW. They are set at about 90 degrees apart from one another. Three of them are somewhat loaf shaped with a flat bottom and rounded top (#1, 2, and 4). There is one, on the SW (#3), that is more oval in shape. The pairs are also not aligned with one another, ie. They are not directly above below one another. At the bottom there is a large stone in the west and in the SE are posssible Roman architectural fragments. Otherwise the bottom is hard packed dirt with a few cobbles.
