Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is light brownish grey. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 89 represents a small-scale cleaning of pedestaled soil in Unit II Room 6 W of NB 864 Pit 10 and overlying the grave represented by Context 71 (deposit) and Context 72 (skeleton), Grave 2014-02. We discovered that Context 71 extended under this pedestal and possibly as far as the W scarp of NB 864 Pit 10, where tarsals from a burial were discovered and left in situ. We therefore decided to remove the overlying pedestal in order to isolate the cut of the grave, particularly since elsewhere the cut was destroyed by overlying burials (Graves 1995-2 and 1996-5, both in NB 864).
Because the surface had been left exposed since the last excavation in 1996 and was fairly mossy, we decided to scrape the upper contaminated level down using hand picks and trowels. After a few centimeters, we arbitrarily closed the cleaning, having removed the plant life and the sun-hardened crust.
We then decided to continue removing soil from this pedestal stratigraphically in an effort to define the cut of Grave 2014-02. We therefore opened Context 90 immediately below the cleaning level.
